October is Down Syndrome Awareness Month

This is my adorable niece, A'reian (Are-ee-on). She and Amara are 8 months apart and very best friends! They learn so much from each other. Their absolute favorite thing to do is watch Signing Time. We started teaching all of our kids sign language by the time they were about five months old. It was amazing how well they could communicate with us and each other at such a young age!
In honor of Down Syndrome Awareness Month, Parenting.com has posted pictures of beautiful babies with down syndrome. For more information on this site and other facts about down syndrome, visit A'reian and Anthony's page...

A few of my favorite pictures!

I must say, I have some adorable babies.....and they are characters!! I don't have any funny pics of Griff right now; I'll try and find some. I have plenty of Mar being silly! And some very handsome pictures of Griffen. All the girls at work are in love with him and wish he were older!! I constantly have to remind them....HE'S 10!! BACK OFF!! :-)
Amara is so funny! The picture where it looks like she's eating spaghetti out of the grass.....she is! And wearing my swimsuit over her pajamas, which are on backwards! And she likes to pull her shirts on top of her head! And finally, attempting to sip champagne at her Aunt Brandi's reception (she didn't get any.....just for the record!) She keeps us VERY BUSY!!

From the beginning....

Here's our story....I met Ethan 6 years ago in Fort Worth. We decided after a couple of years to add on to our family. We found out I was pregnant on Halloween of 2005. We were so excited! And scared....it had been 71/2 years! All of the ultrasounds looked great and we were thrilled to find out we were having a girl! A playmate for RayRay! When I was 7 months pregnant with Amara, we all moved to Utah, and boy what a journey that was.......A 7 year old, a pregnant woman, a newborn and 2 dogs! LOTS of pee stops!!! Amara was born on June 29, 2006 at 12:29pm (7lbs 14oz 201/2in) and appeared to be healthy as can be......but later that night we noticed she wasn't eating properly, she wanted to eat, but couldn't breath. The nurses tried to tell us she just had the newborn stuffiness and she would be fine but we knew it was something more than that. As the night went on, she got worse and worse and her oxygen level was in the 80's. She was immediately taken to the NICU. We were scared to death! I had just had a cesarean but refused to wait for the nurses to stroll me down to see her in a wheelchair, so I walked down to the NICU every chance I could (I got in trouble, by the nurses and Ethan, but I just didn't have the patience to wait). The pediatrician at LDS hospital sent a ct scan to Primary Children's to see if the ENT's there could see anything unusual with her nose. They discovered her nasal passages' were almost half the size they should be.....no wonder she couldn't breath!! She was transfered to Primary's where we spent the next 4 weeks. She had her 1st surgery on July 7th. They put stents in her nose after they drilled the holes bigger. It was so hard to see her with breathing tubes and this puffy little nose and lip. She looked just like little Cindy-Lou-Whoo!
Anyway, after one more surgery and some follow-up visits, she was perfect! Thanks to my family for taking care of our other baby for an entire month!
